
Justice N.Ibotombi Singh was born on 1st March, 1923. Having received his initial education at Imphal he shifted to Gauhati and joined Cotton College. He graduated in Law from Calcutta University and was enrolled as a Pleader on 19th April, 1950 in the Judicial Commissioner’s Court, Manipur. He was enrolled as an Advocate on 14th September, 1955 and was made Senior Advocate of the High Court in March 1976. He was appointed as Advocate General of Manipur on 21st January, 1972 which office he held till his elevation to the Bench as a Permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 21st September, 1976.
As Judge of the High Court, Justice Singh made very significant contribution to the development of law. He was a great defender of civil rights. His judgments in Habeas Corpus cases, Press Law Cases, Armed Forces Cases, Bail Matters will remain land mark decisions of this Court.
Justice Singh was a great judge in the true sense of the term. By his judicial temperament, uprightness, pleasant disposition and firm conviction Justice Singh endeared him to all and got unreserved love, respect and admiration from the Bar and the people of the region.
